Earth day looks a little different this year than we’d originally planned. We wanted to spend the day outside with friends and coworkers cleaning up trails, planting trees, and celebrate together afterward with a beer.
Instead, we’re finding ways that we can do our part from home, at a safe distance.
We installed our current canning line in 2014, and transitioned our year-round beers to cans in 2015. Aluminum is much easier to recycle and is the most recycled package in the world. Nearly 75% of all aluminum and 80-90% of all steel ever produced is still in use today. Thanks to the well-established recycling infrastructure, a recycled aluminum package can be back on the store shelf in as little as 60 days.
If your neighborhood does not currently recycle or you don’t have a regular pick up, check out berecycled.org to find a recycling center near you.
At the brewery, we moved away from plastic ware in our employee break room and in our tasting room as a way to reduce our impact on the environment. We also identified opportunities to reduce the use of recycled materials. By choosing not to put our 12-packs in trays, we’ve eliminated thousands of pieces of cardboard across our footprint.
How can you contribute from home? You may find yourself using fewer single-use containers as you spend more time at home, but what about onyour shopping trips? Pack your reusable bags before you head to the store for a more sustainable trip.
Looking for some sturdy reusable totes? Our Burlap Tote is sturdy and structured, making it ideal for loading up with groceries.
Not only do we send spent grain to farmers rather than to a landfill, but we also compost the byproduct from our Wastewater Pretreatment Facility. We also compost in our employee break room! To learn more about our Wastewater Pretreatment Facility on our Sustainability page!
Why not start composting at home?! Check out how you can get started here.
As a tribe, we’ve held river cleanups in Athens, beach clean-ups in Florida, and supported efforts across our distribution area.
In the past, we’ve hosted Ales for Trails events to support local trail building and clean up efforts, but you don’t need a specific event to clean up your local trails and parks and prevent the trash from finding its way into our rivers. Grab a bag and walk your local trails and pick up trash, then crack open a beer afterwards for your own Ales for Trails event!
We’ll make this one really easy for you! In 2019, we installed over 700 Solar Panels on the roof of our brewerythrough a partnership with Cherry Street Energy to increase our use of renewable energy.
When you grab a 6-pack or 12-pack of Terrapin, you’re already drinking solar brewed beer! Looking for our beer? If you’re near the brewery, you can order online for pick up. If not, use our beer finder to get an idea of where Terrapin beer is near you!
